Figures carrying lights originated in late 18th century France, where human and mythological figures upheld candle sockets.Etienne Maurice Falconet’s draped or semi-nude figures in bronze dore held aloft sprays of metal flowers, cornucopias, and vases. What began as a popular ornament for a fireplace mantle soon evolved into complex lighting fixtures. The English furniture designer Thomas Sheraton first mentions figure lights in his 1803 edition of the Cabinet Dictionary, introducing a concept which would soon become a hallmark of the well-appointed Victorian interior.
