Finalists Announced for
2013 Showroom of the Year Awards

Finalists for the fourth annual Showroom of the Year Awards have been announced. The awards, which honor the top lighting retailers in North America, are presented by Residential Lighting magazine and the Dallas Market Center, which hosts the Dallas International Lighting Market twice a year in January and June. This is the premier buying event for the lighting showroom market, and Residential Lighting is the leading trade publication serving this segment.

During the summer edition of the show, which runs June 20-23, 2013, one Showroom of the Year will be named in each of three dollar-volume categories (annual revenue under $2 million, revenue under $5 million, and $5 million and over) from a field of 10 finalists in that category. All finalists are also eligible for three specialty awards, including Outstanding Merchandising Display and Exceptional Community Involvement.

A new specialty award will be presented this year highlighting the first Showroom of the Year Social Media Star. Three judges evaluated finalists’ social media pages and engagement, but 50 percent of the decision selecting this winner will be determined by “likes” posted to finalist profiles within the Showroom of the Year Social Media Star Event on Residential Lighting magazine’s Facebook page through May 26. (

“Today’s lighting showroom has evolved and incorporates a higher level of technology in day-to-day operations, both in terms of product offerings and engagement with customers,” says Laura Van Zeyl, Publisher and Editorial Director of Residential Lighting. “The integration of an award that recognizes social media prowess acknowledges the new ways our readers are doing business, and crowd-sourcing a portion of the results gives everyone a chance to participate in this year’s judging process.”

All awards will be presented at an opening night reception on Thursday, June 20, on the fourth floor of the Dallas Trade Mart (Loft 4 area). All market attendees and exhibitors are welcome to participate in the event with no additional tickets required.

Three geographically diverse retail experts judged the finalists and winners. This year’s judges were Mike Anderson, Vice President of Consumer Insights and Communication at the Center for Sales Strategy, Minneapolis, MN; Barbara Crowhurst, CEO of Retail Makeover, Ajax, ON; and Rick Segel, CSP, Principal of The Retailer’s Advantage, Kissimmee, FL.

Any independent lighting retailer in North America could enter the competition, and anyone in the lighting industry could nominate a store. Entries and nominations were received between Dec. 4, 2012, and Feb. 28, 2013. Nominees were judged on a variety of aspects of their business, including merchandising display, marketing and advertising, customer service and engagement, employee education and motivation, and community involvement.

All of the finalists will be profiled in a special section appearing in the May issue of Residential Lighting. The section will also be distributed at the June Dallas International Lighting Market.
