The urge to save energy in every aspect of our lives has seeped into the world of rock and roll. The superband, Radiohead, shocked the music world by giving away their new album for free online and now they’ve extended their reputation for innovation by using several strategies to make their live shows more eco-friendly. Among these strategies is the use of LED lighting on stage.

LED lighting consists of small light bulbs that are far more energy efficient than other lights. It was not until recently that the technology has allowed them to be bright enough for massive stage performances like those of Radiohead. In fact, their most common use was tiny, single lights such those lights you may have on that $2 keychain you never use. But LED lighting technology has evolved and for good reason; they give off a fraction of the heat incandescent bulbs do and they also last 133 times longer.

Touring rock and roll shows are notorious for the amount of energy they use not only with intense stadium and arena lights, but massive wastes of plastic from all those beer cups and fuel for hauling tons of equipment across the globe.
